Balaji Padmanaban Athreya, M.D., F.A.S.N., F.A.S.H.

Dr. Athreya, affectionately called “Doctor Pad” by his patients, graduated with a medical degree from Thanjavur Medical College in Thanjavur, India in 1991. He pursued general surgery training through Thanjavur Medical College. He received additional medical training in the United Kingdom where he served in separate yearlong senior house officer positions in Accident and Emergency medicine at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands, United Kingdom and at New Ham General Hospital in London. From 1995-2000, he continued his medical education with a three-year residency in Internal Medicine followed by a two-year fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Padmanaban Athreya joined Pioneer Valley Nephrology in August 2000.

Dr. Athreya is very active in his medical field and maintains membership in numerous professional organizations including the Indian Medical Association, American Society of Nephrology, Renal Physicians Association, International Society of Nephrology, American Society of Interventional and Diagnostic Nephrology, Massachusetts Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.

He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has a subspecialty certification in Nephrology. He is an associate member of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Athreya has achieved designation as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) in 2001 and was the first physician in Western Massachusetts to be honored by the society with a fellowship (FASH) in May 2011. He is also a Fellow of American Society of Nephrology (FASN) since 2001.
